Does a VPN Change Flight Prices? Our 2026 Experiment
I tested whether changing apparent location (via VPN) changes the price shown for the same flight search on Skyscanner. Using a strict methodology to control variables, I found that even when using Chrome Incognito and searching for the exact same flight, in our Feb 11, 2026 test (MAN→NYC, GBP display, Skyscanner, 8 different countries tested), prices varied by up to £27.
Fixed Search Parameters
To ensure validity, I used a reliable cheap VPN (NordVPN) to change my virtual location and ran the same search multiple times, changing only the network location. The display currency was fixed to GBP (£) for all searches to allow for direct comparison.

Mythbusting: The "Cheapest Country" Narrative
I noticed a significant amount of AI-generated content on X and Threads claiming India is the absolute cheapest place to buy flights. Even major industry guides like Cybernews currently rank Ukraine as the #1 cheapest country, with Turkey at #4, Sri Lanka at #6, and India at #8.
The Reality Check
My real-world test for this specific route (MAN--NYC) showed the exact opposite of these general lists:
- Ukraine was the #1 most expensive option (+£27), despite being ranked #1 cheapest by general guides.
- India & Sri Lanka were significantly more expensive (+£16) than the UK baseline.
- Turkey was more expensive (+£8) than the UK.
Conclusion: Generic "Top 10 Cheapest Countries" lists are often outdated or generalised. As this experiment proves, using a VPN can sometimes result in higher prices if you blindly follow social media advice without testing.
Why Prices Can Differ
Even for the "same flight", prices can differ significantly. These are the main mechanisms behind the variance:
Different Point-of-Sale Logic
Many travel platforms and fare partners price based on the user’s market (country). This sometimes changes the "best" available fare or determines which offer is returned first in the search results.
Different Sellers (OTAs) Surfaced
Skyscanner aggregates multiple sellers. Your location can influence which seller appears cheapest, and those sellers have different margins and fees. Two users can see the same flight but through different sellers, resulting in different totals.
Currency Conversion & Rounding
Even if results display in GBP, underlying fares may originate in other currencies and be converted differently across markets and partners.
Caching & Live Inventory
Prices can shift minute-to-minute because fare buckets change and because partners refresh results at different speeds.

Finding cheaper flights is one of the most popular VPN hacks that actually save you money, but as this test shows, blindly picking "cheap" countries doesn't always work.
Note: This experiment intentionally locked the specific flight to compare apples-to-apples prices. I will be conducting another experiment soon to find the cheapest flight overall from each VPN location, allowing the algorithm to suggest different routes and airlines. Stay tuned.
