How I Tested iTop VPN on 5 October 2026
I retested the same parts of iTop that matter most to this review: the Windows free experience, connection behaviour, the kill switch, specialist routes, server loads, long-distance performance and the current iPhone app. My Windows test used version 7.5; the App Store still lists iOS 7.1.1 as the current version I could verify.
Install and everyday use
The Windows app remained easy to navigate. Streaming, gaming, social and download categories are much clearer than hunting through a generic server list.
Kill switch
During an unstable-connection check, traffic was blocked when the VPN tunnel dropped rather than silently falling back to the normal connection.
Free-plan allowance
The Windows app showed 300MB per day. That is enough for short browsing sessions but too restrictive for regular streaming, downloads or long video calls.
Free routes
I could select six free route entries. The visible loads ranged from 52% to 98%, so the quality of the free choices varied substantially.
Speed
Nearby servers felt acceptable for browsing and lighter streaming. Some long-distance routes in my test lost 80% or more versus the unprotected connection.
Protocol choice
Windows 7.5 gave me UDP, TCP and HTTPS modes, but I did not see a WireGuard option in the app I tested.

- Easy Windows app. The specialist server categories make common jobs simple.
- Kill switch worked. The tunnel failure test did not leak straight back onto the normal connection.

- Very cheap long-term pricing. The current 36-month promotion is difficult to ignore if budget is the priority.

What holds it back
- No public no-logs audit. The privacy case still depends mainly on iTop's own policy.
- Free tier is cramped on Windows. 300MB disappears quickly.
- Long-distance speed can fall hard. Some routes lost 80%+ in testing.
- Product claims conflict. Current iTop pages disagree about device counts and free-plan details.
- No WireGuard option in my Windows build. That makes the protocol menu look dated beside stronger rivals.
iTop VPN Free Plan: Useful for Short Sessions, Not Daily Use
The free plan is one of iTop's biggest selling points, but it is also where the product feels least consistent. In my fresh Windows test, the app gave me 300MB per day. iTop's live free-plan page says Windows and Mac receive limited daily traffic while Android and iOS receive unlimited free traffic, so the free experience changes significantly by platform.

iTop's current server directory separately advertises 10+ free servers across the US, UK, Japan, Germany and France. I would not treat that as a contradiction with the six route labels I saw in the app — a route label and a physical server count are not the same thing — but the company should make the difference clearer.

iTop VPN Price and Value
The paid plan makes much more sense than the Windows free plan. A current official promotion advertises 24 months plus 12 months free for $59.99 upfront, equivalent to $1.66 per month. A 12-month option is also advertised at $47.99, or $3.99 per month. Promotions change frequently, so the full charge and renewal terms matter more than the headline monthly number.
The inconsistent device limit is the part I would check most carefully before buying. One live iTop comparison page currently says 5 devices, while another official promotional page advertises 8 devices secured at once. I would use the exact checkout plan as the deciding source.
Apps and Features
Windows remains the strongest version of iTop in my testing. It puts the kill switch, split tunnelling, Double VPN, Ads Block, Browser Privacy, Security Reinforce and specialist streaming, gaming, social and P2P routes in one interface. That is a good fit for beginners because most of the useful tools are visible rather than buried.
The iPhone app is simpler. Version 7.1.1, which remains the latest App Store version I could verify, added Always-On VPN/automatic reconnection, split tunnelling and new server locations. I still prefer the Windows app because it exposes more of iTop's specialist features.
Protocol note
My Windows 7.5 build offered UDP, TCP and HTTPS modes but no WireGuard option. I am treating that as a finding from the app I tested, not as a claim that every iTop app on every platform exposes exactly the same protocols.
Privacy and Trust: The Main Reason I Would Not Use iTop for High-Risk Work
iTop's privacy policy says it does not log your original IP address, browsing history, traffic destination, DNS queries or transferred data. That is the right promise. The problem is that the public English policy is still marked 14 June 2022, and I could not find a current public independent audit of the VPN's no-logs claim.
The same policy explains that iTop can collect account, support and diagnostic information such as an email address, phone number, order reference, device/system information, crash logs, cookies and analytics data. None of that automatically makes the VPN unsafe, but it reinforces why I want an external audit rather than relying on marketing language alone.
Speed and Streaming
Speed
Nearby servers were fine for normal browsing and lighter streaming. Long-distance performance was the weakness: some Europe-to-US and Europe-to-Australia routes in my testing lost 80% or more versus the baseline. That is too inconsistent for me to recommend iTop for heavy international downloads, latency-sensitive gaming or frequent remote work across long routes.
Streaming
iTop did better when I used its named streaming servers instead of random country nodes. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, YouTube, Peacock and Apple TV+ were usable to varying degrees in my checks, but I would still call the overall result mixed rather than top-tier.

I would look elsewhere if

- You regularly use long-distance servers and care about consistent speed.
- You want a clearly documented simultaneous-device limit.
- You specifically want WireGuard in the Windows app.
- You need a privacy-first VPN for sensitive or high-risk work.

The problem is trust and consistency. The Windows free plan is restrictive, the company's live pages still disagree about device limits and free-plan details, long-distance performance can fall sharply, the Windows 7.5 build I tested had no WireGuard option, and the no-logs claim still lacks the kind of public independent audit I expect from a serious privacy service. I would use iTop for low-risk everyday VPN jobs if price mattered. I would not make it my first choice for privacy-sensitive work.
