ExpressVPN vs NordVPN: Which Is Better in 2026?

Speed, security, privacy, streaming, apps and price compared

|

NordVPN is the better all-round choice for most people, while ExpressVPN is easier to use and stronger on routers. That is the short version of this ExpressVPN vs NordVPN comparison. The closer decision depends on whether you care most about speed and advanced features, or simple apps and whole-home coverage.

We compared NordVPN and ExpressVPN across the areas that affect day-to-day use: connection speed, security and privacy, server coverage, streaming, P2P support, gaming, apps, device limits, router support and price. Network sizes, plans and promotions can change, so the figures below were checked on 13 June 2026.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN verdict

NordVPN is our overall winner. It gives you the better balance of speed, server choice, security features and long-term value. ExpressVPN is not far behind: its Lightway protocol is quick and stable, its interface is easier to learn, and its router software remains a genuine advantage.

The simple answer to “ExpressVPN or NordVPN?” is this: choose NordVPN for performance and features; choose ExpressVPN for simplicity and router use.

NordVPN summary

NordVPN is the stronger all-rounder. NordLynx performed better in our speed testing, the network is substantially larger, and tools such as Threat Protection Pro, Meshnet, Double VPN and specialty servers give advanced users more control.

our complete NordVPN review

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN speed: NordLynx vs Lightway

Speed is the clearest difference between NordVPN and ExpressVPN. In our latest head-to-head testing, NordVPN was faster overall, particularly on high-bandwidth connections where NordLynx could make better use of the available line speed. You can see the test setup and recorded results in our latest NordVPN speed tests.

NordLynx is NordVPN's WireGuard-based protocol and remains the best default for downloads, 4K streaming, gaming and everyday use. ExpressVPN's Lightway is also fast, reconnects quickly when a phone changes networks and is written in Rust. Lightway Turbo can improve throughput on supported Windows configurations, but availability is not yet identical across every platform.

Speed winner: NordVPN. ExpressVPN remains fast enough for demanding use, but NordVPN has the higher performance ceiling in this comparison. Your own results will depend on distance, server load, device hardware, protocol and ISP routing.

Security, privacy, no-logs policies and audits

Both VPNs use modern encryption, private DNS, leak protection and a kill switch. ExpressVPN calls its kill switch Network Lock; NordVPN provides system-wide and app-level kill-switch options on supported platforms. Neither service records browsing activity under its published no-logs policy.

Jurisdiction and company trust

ExpressVPN operates from the British Virgin Islands, while NordVPN operates under Panama's jurisdiction. Neither jurisdiction imposes a general mandatory data-retention requirement on these VPN providers. Jurisdiction is only one part of the picture, however: technical design, published policies, incident response and independent verification matter more than a flag on a company page.

For a deeper look at NordVPN's logging policy, infrastructure and security controls, read our assessment of NordVPN’s security. We apply the same scrutiny to ownership, server design, privacy claims and past incidents in our ExpressVPN security assessment.

Independent audit record

NordVPN's most recent assurance engagement was carried out by Deloitte between November and December 2025 and became NordVPN’s sixth no-logs audit. It was a point-in-time assessment of whether the service was configured in line with its no-logs statements during the engagement period.

ExpressVPN's published audit programme covers its privacy-policy controls, TrustedServer infrastructure, desktop and mobile apps, browser tools, Aircove and the Lightway protocol. Our summary of ExpressVPN’s independent security audits explains what was tested and why a product audit is not the same thing as a permanent guarantee.

Extra security features

ExpressVPNThreat Manager, ad and tracker blocking, parental controls on supported plans, TrustedServer, split tunnelling on supported apps, password-management and privacy add-ons depending on plan and region.
NordVPNThreat Protection and Threat Protection Pro on supported platforms, Meshnet, Dark Web Monitor, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated servers and optional dedicated IP locations.

Security winner: draw for core VPN protection; NordVPN for the broader feature set. ExpressVPN is deliberately simpler. NordVPN gives experienced users more specialist tools, but some features depend on the operating system and subscription tier.

Server count and country coverage

NordVPN now has the larger network on both headline measures. Its current server list states 8,400+ servers in 167+ countries. The service also offers specialist categories for P2P, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated connections.

ExpressVPN does not publish a total server count, so comparisons that claim a precise figure are unreliable. It does publish coverage of 105 countries and more than 170 server locations. ExpressVPN also identifies virtual server locations, where the registered IP location and physical server location differ.

Server-network winner: NordVPN. ExpressVPN still has enough geographic reach for most travellers, but NordVPN currently offers more country choices and a larger disclosed fleet.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN for Netflix and streaming

Both services worked with major streaming platforms in our checks, including Netflix and BBC iPlayer, but no VPN can guarantee permanent access. Streaming services routinely change their detection systems, and performance can vary by country, server and account.

NordVPN has SmartPlay built into its apps, so there is normally nothing extra to configure. Its speed advantage also helps with quick starts and high-bitrate 4K video. ExpressVPN is particularly convenient on televisions and consoles because it combines native TV apps, strong router support and MediaStreamer for certain devices that cannot run VPN software.

MediaStreamer and NordVPN's standalone SmartDNS options are DNS tools rather than full VPN tunnels. They can help with compatible streaming devices, but they do not provide the encryption or privacy protection of a normal VPN connection.

Streaming winner: NordVPN, narrowly. ExpressVPN remains one of the easiest streaming VPNs to install across a complicated home setup.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN for torrenting and P2P

Both VPNs support peer-to-peer traffic and include kill-switch protection, which is essential if you do not want your normal IP address exposed when a VPN connection drops. NordVPN provides a dedicated P2P server category and also documents SOCKS5 proxy setups for popular torrent clients. ExpressVPN takes a simpler approach and is a good choice for users who do not want to think about specialty-server selection.

NordVPN does not provide inbound port forwarding. ExpressVPN is not a port-forwarding choice either, so users who rely on opening an incoming port for maximum seeding performance should consider that limitation before subscribing.

Torrenting winner: NordVPN because of its faster tested speeds and P2P-specific server options. Use either service only for files you have the legal right to download or share.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN for gaming and low ping

A VPN cannot make every game faster. It adds an extra network hop, so the best gaming result usually comes from choosing a lightly loaded server close to you or close to the game server. A VPN can still hide your home IP address, reduce exposure to some DDoS attacks and help when an ISP is routing traffic badly.

NordVPN is the better gaming VPN for raw speed and latency potential. NordLynx is the sensible protocol for PC and mobile gaming. ExpressVPN's advantage is hardware: its router software and Aircove products make it easier to protect an Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch or any other console that does not support a native VPN app.

Gaming winner: NordVPN for performance; ExpressVPN for console-friendly router setup.

Apps, devices, routers and simultaneous connections

Both providers cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, browsers, Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV. They also support routers, although the experience is different.

ExpressVPN has the cleaner interface: choose a location, press the large connect button and leave most settings alone. Its current plans support up to 14 simultaneous connections, depending on the tier. ExpressVPN's dedicated router interface and Aircove hardware are major advantages for whole-home VPN use and devices that cannot install an app.

NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections. Its apps contain more controls, server categories and security modules, which is useful once you know what they do but can feel busier at first. Router installation is available, although it is generally a manual configuration rather than an ExpressVPN-style router app.

Ease-of-use winner: ExpressVPN. Feature-depth winner: NordVPN. Multi-device winner: ExpressVPN Pro, although NordVPN matches ExpressVPN Basic.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN price, plans and value

NordVPN usually has the lower introductory cost on a long subscription and remains our value winner. Its plan structure lets you pay for the VPN alone or add products such as NordPass and NordLocker through higher bundles. Check the renewal price before buying, because the monthly equivalent shown in a promotion is not always the rate charged at renewal.

ExpressVPN now sells Basic, Advanced and Pro tiers rather than one identical package. Basic includes the core VPN and ten device connections; higher tiers raise the connection limit and add more privacy, identity or security services. This gives ExpressVPN more price flexibility than it had in the past, but comparable long-term NordVPN plans are still usually better value.

Both providers offer a 30-day money-back guarantee for qualifying new subscriptions. ExpressVPN offers a three-day mobile trial through supported iOS and Android sign-ups. NordVPN offers a three-day Android trial in eligible regions. App-store rules, previous refunds and special promotions can affect eligibility, so read the checkout terms rather than assuming every purchase is covered.

Price winner: NordVPN. ExpressVPN may still be worth paying more for when its interface or router support solves a specific problem in your home.

How we compared ExpressVPN and NordVPN

We used both services, reviewed our latest speed results and checked each provider's current technical, privacy and subscription information. The verdict gives the most weight to speed, security, privacy, streaming reliability, app quality, device support and total value.

Results vary by device, location, server and internet connection. Streaming access, prices and network figures can also change after publication.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN: common questions

Is NordVPN better than ExpressVPN?

NordVPN is the better all-round choice for most people in this comparison because it combines faster results in our testing, a larger current server network, more advanced security tools and stronger long-term value. ExpressVPN remains the better fit for people who prioritise a simpler app and first-class router support.

Is ExpressVPN faster than NordVPN?

Not in our latest comparison. NordVPN using NordLynx delivered the stronger overall speed results, although ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol was still fast, stable and suitable for 4K streaming, gaming and everyday browsing. Results vary by server, device and connection.

Which is safer, NordVPN or ExpressVPN?

Both are credible privacy choices. NordVPN operates under Panama's jurisdiction and has completed six independent no-logs assurance engagements. ExpressVPN operates from the British Virgin Islands, uses TrustedServer technology and has published audits covering its privacy controls, apps, server platform and Lightway protocol.

Which is better for Netflix and streaming?

Both worked well with major streaming services in our checks. NordVPN is our narrow winner for streaming because of its speed and built-in SmartPlay technology. ExpressVPN is especially convenient on routers and offers MediaStreamer for devices that cannot run a VPN app, although MediaStreamer does not encrypt traffic.

Is NordVPN cheaper than ExpressVPN?

NordVPN normally offers the stronger long-term value, while ExpressVPN now has Basic, Advanced and Pro tiers at different prices. Introductory prices, renewal rates, taxes and promotional terms change, so compare the full checkout cost rather than only the advertised monthly equivalent.
