When we last scored NordVPN in August 2025, it landed on 9.2/10. Since then, it has had a very solid run of improvements across desktop and mobile, and our January 2026 lab testing still backs up the speed claims. That's why this refreshed NordVPN review now sits at 9.6/10.

9.6/10 Overall Score
Security 9.8/10
Speed 9.7/10
Streaming 9.5/10
Trust 9.4/10
Value 9.4/10
Best Fit

NordVPN is one of the easiest premium VPNs to recommend, but the reason depends on what you need it for.

FOR MOST PEOPLE 9.8/10

Fast, polished, strong for streaming, travel and day-to-day privacy, with extra security tools that are actually useful.

FOR BUDGET-FIRST BUYERS 9.1/10

Still excellent, but the smartest value comes when you use the live offers rather than paying whatever the default price happens to be.

Why The Score Went Up

From 9.2 To 9.6

Our August 2025 rating of 9.2 was already high, but NordVPN has not stood still. Since then it has improved phishing protection, connection logic, mobile usability, Android scam-call tools, dark web monitoring and recovery options. Just as importantly, it still performs like a premium VPN in testing rather than just in marketing copy.

To get the wider picture, this page works best alongside our NordVPN speed test results, our breakdown of how NordVPN passed its sixth no-logs audit, and our guide to whether NordVPN is safe.

Score Change: Up from 9.2 to 9.6
NordVPN review summary image

What It Nails

  • Still excellent all-round NordVPN remains one of the few VPNs that feels strong across speed, streaming, travel, privacy and general ease of use.
  • Desktop safety is better than it was Threat Protection Pro has become more practical, especially with email link scanning and better malware prompt handling.
  • Android has improved properly Scam-call warnings, call blocking, a cleaner design and diagnostics tools have made the mobile app much more complete.
  • Trust story is still strong Audits, RAM-only infrastructure and NordLynx keep it in the top tier for people who care about both performance and credibility.

The Drawbacks

  • Some extras depend on platform Not every feature lands on every device at the same time, so Windows, macOS and Android don't always get the same experience.
  • It's more of a security bundle now That helps most people, but if you want a stripped-back VPN with nothing extra, NordVPN is moving the other way.
  • Pricing needs a careful look Introductory offers are usually good, but plan differences and renewal costs mean you should check the live price before buying.
  • Virtual locations won't suit everyone They help with coverage, but some privacy-focused users still prefer a clear physical-server footprint wherever possible.

What's New Since Our Last Review

Desktop got the sort of upgrades that matter

Email Protection is one of the more useful additions. It scans visible links in supported webmail pages and flags ones tied to phishing, malware or scams before you click. That's far more useful than a feature that only looks good in a launch graphic.

NordVPN also improved quick connect logic. You can now set a preferred country or server group for the main connection button, and the fastest-server option is making a smarter call than it used to.

Standout desktop changes:Email Protection + better quick connect
Impact on score:Clearly positive

Android had the biggest visible jump

January 2026 added automatic scam and telemarketing call blocking on supported plans and regions. February 2026 brought a cleaner mobile design with simpler navigation and more helpful connection controls. March 2026 followed with suspected scam-call warnings before you answer and a diagnostics and repair tool in the Help area.

That matters because Android used to feel more limited than desktop. It doesn't feel that way to the same extent now.

Best Android additions:Call Protection, call blocking, redesign, diagnostics
Mobile direction:Much better

Broader coverage and stronger monitoring

NordVPN also added almost 30 new virtual locations, taking the total to 79, which helps in regions where physical deployment is harder. Dark Web Monitor Pro also expanded on Android and macOS, going beyond leaked email and password combinations to cover phone numbers, credit cards, national ID numbers and up to eight email addresses.

If you want more detail on that side of the product, see our guide to NordVPN's Dark Web Monitoring tool.

Small changes still count

Some updates aren't headline material, but they do make the product better to live with. Windows now tries to restore the VPN automatically after a connection drop while keeping leak protection active. Threat Protection Pro on Windows also changed how harmful files are handled, with clearer keep-or-delete choices and an auto-delete rule if you want less friction.

Security, Privacy & Trust

NordVPN still earns its place near the top because it isn't leaning on one claim. The trust case is layered. Repeated audit headlines, RAM-only infrastructure, NordLynx performance and a better security toolkit all add up.

Audits, RAM-only servers and NordWhisper

If you want the deeper trust story, read how NordVPN passed its sixth no-logs audit, why it uses RAM-only servers, and what the NordWhisper protocol is designed to do on more restrictive networks.

More than just a tunnel

NordVPN has moved well beyond being a simple VPN switch. Between Threat Protection Pro, Dark Web Monitor Pro, smarter connection behaviour and mobile scam-call tools, it now covers more of the real risks face between sessions too.

Primary Protocol NordLynx
Audit Story Sixth No-Logs Check
Server Model RAM-Only

Performance & Everyday Speed

Fast, and still genuinely fast in testing

NordVPN was already one of the faster mainstream VPNs when we last reviewed it, and the latest connection logic makes that experience a bit more predictable. If you want the fastest option, the app now makes a smarter pick. If you know exactly where you want to land, you can set a preferred quick-connect location and keep it simple.

More importantly, our January 2026 results show the speed isn't just good on paper. On a 500Mbps fibre line, NordVPN averaged 517.17 Mbps in Manchester, 458.28 Mbps in New York and 311.75 Mbps in Melbourne. That's very good. In plain English, it means the local UK result is near-lossless, the US result is easily fast enough for 4K streaming and heavy downloads, and even the Australia result is far stronger than most people would expect over that distance.

So yes, the speed is good. Very good, in fact. For most users, it's more than enough for streaming, gaming, video calls, cloud backups and large downloads without the VPN feeling like the bottleneck.

Best everyday combo:NordLynx + smarter server selection
Speed verdict:Still top tier

Our January 2026 Lab Speed Data

We also wanted this updated review to reflect our own hard numbers, not just the app's new features. In January 2026 we ran NordVPN through a wired 500Mbps Virgin Media M500 fibre line using three consecutive runs per test. The full write-up is on our dedicated NordVPN 2026 speed test page, but the headline results are worth including here because they help explain why the score stayed strong while the feature set improved.

Is that speed actually good?

Yes. It's good by any normal standard, and it's especially good for a consumer VPN. The Manchester result kept more than 96% of the baseline, which is excellent. The New York result kept more than 85% of the line speed across the Atlantic, which is the sort of number that makes streaming and large downloads feel effortless. Even Melbourne held above 300 Mbps, which is impressive for that distance.

Put simply, these are not just acceptable numbers. They are strong numbers. You aren't looking at a VPN that collapses the moment you leave your home region.

Baseline line speed:536.70 Mbps download
Best VPN result:517.17 Mbps in Manchester
Best long-distance result:458.28 Mbps in New York
Overall takeaway:Fast enough for almost anyone

USA New York458.28 Mbps85.39%48.01 Mbps90.67 ms
Australia Melbourne311.75 Mbps58.09%35.79 Mbps305.33 ms

What the routing checks told us

We also ran wrong-side tests to look for obvious fake-location behaviour. The New York route came back with an average round-trip ping of 164.33 ms when forced against a UK server. Melbourne hit 578.00 ms. Those are the sort of numbers you want to see if the traffic is actually travelling that distance.

That doesn't prove every NordVPN endpoint is identical, but it does make the New York and Melbourne test routes look credible. If you want the full forensic breakdown, head to the full NordVPN speed test article.

The Trade-Offs

NordVPN is easy to recommend, but it isn't perfect. The main compromise is that the full package now depends more on device and plan than it used to.

Platform variation: Some of the best features are limited by operating system, supported browser or plan tier. Always check what your device actually gets.

Pricing: NordVPN can be great value, but you should still compare the current NordVPN deals & offers and the latest NordVPN trial options before you buy.

Feature creep: Some people want a VPN and nothing else. NordVPN is clearly building a broader security product now, and not everyone will prefer that direction.

Trust History

The old incident still matters, but so does the response

Any honest NordVPN review should acknowledge the older third-party datacentre incident. That is part of the product's history and it should not be brushed aside.

What matters in 2026 is what followed. The audit story improved, the infrastructure moved further towards a RAM-only model, and the service now has a better trust case than it did back then. If you want the full background, read our NordVPN history guide and our plain-English answer to is NordVPN safe.

Ownership & Jurisdiction

Why this still matters

Jurisdiction isn't everything, but it still shapes the privacy conversation. NordVPN has long leaned on a more privacy-friendly legal story than many mainstream tech products, and that still helps its overall position.

The bigger point, though, is that jurisdiction only matters when it is backed by decent engineering. In NordVPN's case, the combination of audits, RAM-only servers, strong protocol design and solid recent testing is what makes the story convincing.

FAQs

Is NordVPN still worth paying for in 2026?

Yes. We wouldn't have moved it from 9.2 to 9.6 otherwise. It's still one of the best all-round picks if you want speed, streaming support, travel usefulness and a genuinely stronger security toolkit than most rivals.

How fast was NordVPN in our January 2026 test?

On our wired 500Mbps fibre line it averaged 517.17 Mbps in the UK, 458.28 Mbps in New York and 311.75 Mbps in Melbourne. Those are very strong numbers, especially once you factor in the distance on the US and Australia routes.

Does NordVPN use real or virtual locations?

It uses both, but our routing integrity checks for New York and Melbourne behaved like genuine remote infrastructure. The latency jumped in a way that matched the claimed distance, which is what you want to see.

Is NordVPN safer now than it was in 2025?

Yes, slightly but meaningfully. The service now has a broader protection stack, stronger mobile features and a better day-to-day threat-handling story than it did when we last scored it.

Does NordVPN have a free trial or live deals?

Yes. Check our current NordVPN free trial guide and our live NordVPN deals page because those details can change.

Ech the Tech Fox

SUMMARY BY ECH THE TECH FOX

NordVPN was already very good. The difference now is that the product feels more complete without losing the speed and simplicity that made it popular in the first place. The new features are not all equally important, but taken together they are enough to justify the higher score.

"NordVPN remains one of the easiest premium VPNs to recommend because the core performance was already strong and the recent updates are practical rather than cosmetic. Add in the January 2026 speed data, and it's clear this is still a serious product rather than just a well-marketed one."
