NordVPN Review 2026
Exceptionally fast, polished and privacy-credible — but the expanding security bundle makes plan choice more important than it used to be.
I retested NordVPN on 5th October 2026 on Windows and an iPhone 16 Pro, and I am keeping it at 9.6/10. The current Windows 8.12 and iOS 9.14.1 apps were quick to set up, easy to reconnect and still unusually polished for a VPN with this many features. I checked normal browsing, server switching, NordLynx, NordWhisper availability, kill-switch behaviour, basic leak behaviour, streaming use and the current security tools. The biggest downside is no longer the VPN itself; it is working out which paid tier actually includes the extras you want.
The core VPN is the easy part to recommend. The harder decision is whether you need the security bundle above it.
Fast connections, excellent apps, strong streaming, mature privacy controls and enough locations for travel or everyday use.
Still excellent, but the Protect and Monitor features can make the app feel busier than a stripped-back VPN needs to be.
Why I Still Give NordVPN 9.6/10
The score is about the VPN first, not the feature list
NordVPN earns a high score because the basics are unusually hard to fault. In the fresh October test, I could install the apps, sign in, connect, move between locations and get back online after disconnects without having to troubleshoot anything. The Windows app exposes advanced controls when I want them, while the iPhone app keeps the connection flow simple.
The privacy case is also stronger than a marketing promise. NordVPN has completed six independent no-logs assurance engagements and runs its network on RAM-only infrastructure. I still count the old 2018 Finland server incident against its history, but the service I am reviewing now has materially better technical and independent evidence around it.
What stops this being a perfect score is mostly commercial and product complexity: renewal prices are much higher than the introductory deal, virtual locations need context, and some of the newer antivirus, monitoring and mobile-protection tools depend on your subscription, platform or region.
Fresh Hands-On Test: 5th October 2026
I retested the current Windows 8.12 and iOS 9.14.1 apps. This was a practical day-to-day review pass rather than a new controlled lab speed suite. I checked the things that usually expose a weak VPN quickly: setup, server switching, reconnects, kill-switch behaviour, visible IP and basic DNS behaviour, streaming use, protocol controls and how easy the security tools were to understand.
Both apps were straightforward to install and sign into, with no unnecessary setup friction before the first connection.
Secure my connection was quick, and moving between nearby and longer-distance locations felt predictable rather than fiddly.
The Windows kill-switch controls were easy to find, and my basic browser checks did not expose an obvious DNS leak during the test.
NordLynx remains the protocol I would leave selected for normal use. Browsing, video and general app traffic stayed responsive on the routes I tried.
Streaming remained one of NordVPN's stronger use cases in the fresh test, with quick location changes and no obvious day-to-day performance problem on suitable routes.
The tools are good, but the exact antivirus, monitoring, call and message protection mix still depends on plan, platform and region.
NordWhisper is available across the main desktop and mobile platforms for restrictive networks. I checked the protocol option and normal connection behaviour, but this review does not pretend to simulate every censored or filtered network environment.
The exact Mbps figures later in this review remain the separate January 2026 wired benchmark. The October test confirms day-to-day responsiveness, not a replacement laboratory dataset.
NordVPN Pros And Cons
What I liked in the fresh test
- The core VPN is still extremely easy to live with Installation, sign-in, Secure my connection, location switching and reconnects were all straightforward on Windows and iPhone.
- Performance rarely gets in the way Nearby connections felt almost transparent in normal browsing and video use, while the older wired lab benchmark remains one of the strongest results I have recorded.

What still stops it being perfect

- Plan and platform differences matter The VPN is consistent, but antivirus, monitoring and mobile-protection features are not identical on every device or subscription tier.

- Virtual locations need context They are useful for coverage, but they are not the same thing as having physical server hardware in every listed country.
NordVPN Apps: Polished, But Busier Than Before
Windows 8.12 and iOS 9.14.1
The Windows app is where NordVPN's broader security strategy is most obvious. The current layout separates connection, protection and monitoring more clearly than older versions, which helps, but there is simply more going on now than there was when NordVPN was mainly a map and a connect button.
On iPhone, the 9.14 series also reorganises the app around connecting, protecting and monitoring. I still found the mobile experience easy to follow: choosing a location, changing protocol and reconnecting were all quick. The important point is that feature parity is not perfect. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android can expose different security tools even when the VPN connection itself behaves similarly.
Privacy, Security And No-Logs Evidence
I rate NordVPN's privacy position highly because there is more evidence to inspect than a privacy policy. Its no-logs practices have been independently reviewed six times, the network uses RAM-only servers, and the main connection options include NordLynx, OpenVPN and NordWhisper for different network conditions.
What matters most to me
Six assurance engagements do not make any VPN infallible, but repetition matters. It reduces the amount of trust I have to place in a marketing statement alone. RAM-only servers also mean the VPN infrastructure is designed so persistent data is not sitting on ordinary server disks after reboot.
NordVPN says the VPN service operates under Panama's jurisdiction. I treat jurisdiction as one part of the picture rather than a score by itself; audit history, infrastructure design and observed app behaviour tell me more about the product I am actually using.
Server Network And Protocols
NordVPN currently advertises 8,400+ servers in 167+ countries, while its current pages refer to 224 locations. Those numbers describe different things: countries, cities/locations, physical servers and virtual locations are not interchangeable.
For everyday use I would start with NordLynx. NordWhisper is the more interesting option on networks that try to identify or restrict VPN traffic. Virtual locations widen coverage, but if the physical location of the server hardware matters to you, check the specific server type rather than assuming every country label means hardware is physically hosted there.
NordVPN Speed: Still One Of Its Biggest Strengths
Fresh daily-use test plus a separate lab benchmark
In the October hands-on pass, nearby NordLynx connections felt close enough to the unprotected line that I stopped thinking about the VPN after connecting. Web pages, video playback and normal downloads stayed responsive, and moving to a farther location behaved as expected rather than turning the connection unusable.
For repeatable numbers, I keep the older lab run separate. On a wired 536.70 Mbps baseline in January 2026, NordVPN averaged 517.17 Mbps in Manchester, 458.28 Mbps in New York and 311.75 Mbps in Melbourne. Those are historical benchmark results, but they explain why the speed score is still 9.7/10.

NordVPN For Streaming
Streaming is one of the reasons NordVPN is easy to recommend to non-technical users. SmartPlay is built into the apps, so there is no separate streaming mode to configure, and the combination of fast routes and a large location list makes it easy to try another server when one route is not ideal.
My fresh test was positive, but I would not promise permanent access to every streaming platform. What I Would Check Before Buying NordVPN
First, choose the tier around the features you will really use. Basic already gives you the VPN. Complete and Prime cost more because they layer on wider protection, monitoring, storage and identity tools.
Second, check your platform. The VPN connection is broadly consistent, but antivirus, call protection, message protection and other extras are not identical across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
Third, look at renewal before checkout. NordVPN's introductory two-year pricing is competitive; the annual renewal figures are much less aggressive. That difference should be part of the buying decision, not something you discover later.
Trust History: The 2018 Finland Server Incident
Still relevant, but not the whole story
In 2018, an unauthorised party accessed one NordVPN server in a third-party Finnish datacentre through an insecure remote-management system left by the provider. NordVPN says the affected server did not contain user activity logs, usernames or passwords. I still include the incident because a serious review should not erase uncomfortable history.
The service has changed materially since then. Repeated no-logs assurance work and the move to RAM-only infrastructure give me more current evidence to judge. That does not make the old incident irrelevant; it means I weigh it against the security controls and independent verification around the service today.
