We scored NordVPN 9.2/10 in August 2025. The current 9.6/10 score reflects stronger desktop and mobile features, better scam and phishing protection, and January 2026 lab results that still show excellent speed. The main caveat is that some extras depend on plan, platform and region.

9.6/10 Overall Score
Security 9.8/10
Speed 9.7/10
Streaming 9.5/10
Trust 9.4/10
Value 9.4/10
Best Fit

NordVPN is one of the easiest premium VPNs to recommend, but the reason depends on what you need it for.

FOR MOST PEOPLE 9.8/10

Fast, polished, strong for streaming, travel and day-to-day privacy, with extra security tools that are actually useful.

FOR BUDGET-FIRST BUYERS 9.1/10

Still excellent, but the smartest value comes when you use the live offers rather than paying whatever the default price happens to be.

Why NordVPN Scores 9.6/10

Why the score improved

NordVPN was already a strong VPN when it scored 9.2/10 in August 2025. The current 9.6/10 rating comes from better phishing protection, smoother connection behaviour, stronger mobile tools, Android call protection, wider dark web monitoring and recovery options, backed by strong speed results rather than feature claims alone.

For more detail, read this alongside our NordVPN speed test results, our breakdown of how NordVPN passed its sixth no-logs audit, and our guide to whether NordVPN is safe.

Current score: 9.6/10
NordVPN review summary image

What It Nails

  • Strong across the board NordVPN remains one of the few VPNs that does well on speed, streaming, travel, privacy and everyday ease of use.
  • Desktop protection is more useful NordVPN's scam, phishing and malware protection, formerly Threat Protection Pro, is stronger now, especially with email link scanning on supported macOS and Windows webmail setups.
  • Android feels more complete Call Protection, call blocking options, a cleaner design and diagnostics tools make the mobile app stronger where those features are available.
  • The trust case is still strong Repeated no-logs assurance engagements, RAM-only infrastructure and NordLynx keep it in the top tier for people who care about both performance and credibility.

The Drawbacks

  • Some extras depend on platform, plan and region Windows, macOS, Android and iOS do not always get the same tools, and some newer extras sit behind specific subscription tiers.
  • It is more of a security bundle now That helps most people, but anyone who wants a stripped-back VPN with no extras may find NordVPN busier than they need.
  • Pricing needs checking Introductory offers are usually good, but plan differences and renewal costs mean the live price matters.
  • Virtual locations will not suit everyone They help with coverage, but privacy-focused users should still check our NordVPN physical server locations guide before assuming every location is physically hosted in-country.

What's New Since Our Last Review

Desktop got the sort of upgrades that matter

Email Protection is one of the more useful additions. It scans visible links in supported webmail pages and flags links tied to phishing, malware or scams before you click. That is a practical desktop feature, not just a new label in the app.

NordVPN also improved quick connect. You can set a preferred country or server group for the main connection button, and the fastest-server option feels better tuned than it used to.

Standout desktop changes:Email Protection + better quick connect
Impact on score:Clearly positive

Android had the biggest visible jump

January 2026 added automatic scam and telemarketing call blocking on supported plans and regions. Later updates expanded Dark Web Monitor features on Android and added Call Protection alerts before you answer, along with a diagnostics and repair tool in the Help area.

Android used to feel more limited than desktop. It still has platform limits, but the gap is smaller now, provided your plan, country and app version support the newer tools.

Best Android additions:Call Protection, call blocking, Dark Web Monitor Pro, diagnostics
Mobile direction:Much better

Broader coverage and stronger monitoring

NordVPN added almost 30 new NordVPN virtual server locations in December 2025, bringing the virtual-location count used in our January 2026 testing to 79. That is not the same as the full server network. NordVPN now describes the service as thousands of servers, with support copy saying 8,400+ servers in 167+ countries and pricing copy referring to 224+ locations. For a clearer breakdown of countries, cities and virtual coverage, use our NordVPN server-location list.

Dark Web Monitor Pro has also expanded on Android and macOS. On supported plans, it can cover more than leaked email-and-password pairs, including phone numbers, credit cards, national ID numbers and multiple email addresses.

If you want more detail on that side of the product, see our guide to NordVPN's Dark Web Monitoring tool.

App polish and reliability

The smaller app changes matter too. Windows received fixes after the bigger quick-connect and Email Protection changes, while macOS continued to improve Dark Web Monitor Pro and general app stability in early 2026.

What To Check Before You Buy

Plan, price and feature availability

NordVPN is strongest when the plan you choose includes the tools you actually want. Before paying, check three things: the renewal price, which Threat Protection, Dark Web Monitor and Call Protection features are included, and whether those features work on your main device. For a simpler package breakdown, read our NordVPN Basic Plan Review.

The speed figures in this review come from the January 2026 lab test on a wired 500Mbps fibre line. They are useful performance data, but they are not a live speed guarantee for every server, home connection or country.

Best next step:Compare plan features and renewal terms before checkout
Before you choose a plan

Don’t pay the default price without comparing the offer

Security, Privacy & Trust

NordVPN's security case is not built on one claim. The strongest evidence is the mix of repeated audits, RAM-only infrastructure, NordLynx performance, protocol security concepts such as perfect forward secrecy, independent phishing-test results and a broader security toolkit.

Audits, RAM-only servers and NordWhisper

If you want the deeper trust story, read how NordVPN passed its sixth no-logs audit, why it uses RAM-only servers, and what the NordWhisper protocol is designed to do on more restrictive networks.

More than just a tunnel

NordVPN has moved well beyond being a simple VPN switch. Between scam, phishing and malware protection, Dark Web Monitor Pro, smarter connection behaviour and mobile scam-call tools on supported Android plans and regions, it now covers more of the risks people face between VPN sessions too.

Primary Protocol NordLynx
Audit Story Sixth No-Logs Check

Performance & Everyday Speed

Fast, and still genuinely fast in testing

NordVPN was already one of the faster mainstream VPNs when we last reviewed it, and the newer connection logic makes that experience more predictable. The fastest-server option is better tuned, while the preferred-location setting helps if you usually connect to the same country or server group.

Our January 2026 results also show the speed holding up under testing. On a 500Mbps fibre line, NordVPN averaged 517.17 Mbps in Manchester, 458.28 Mbps in New York and 311.75 Mbps in Melbourne. The local UK result was near-lossless, the US result was easily fast enough for 4K streaming and heavy downloads, and the Australia result stayed stronger than expected over that distance.

For most users, that is more than enough for streaming, gaming, video calls, cloud backups and large downloads without the VPN feeling like the bottleneck.

Best everyday combo:NordLynx + smarter server selection
Speed verdict:Still top tier

Our January 2026 Lab Speed Data

These speed numbers come from a wired 500Mbps Virgin Media M500 fibre line tested in January 2026, with three consecutive runs for each route. The full write-up is on our dedicated NordVPN 2026 speed test page, but the headline results are worth including here because they show how NordVPN performs on local and long-distance routes.

Is that speed actually good?

Yes. The Manchester result kept more than 96% of the baseline, which is excellent. The New York result kept more than 85% of the line speed across the Atlantic, enough for smooth streaming and large downloads. Even Melbourne held above 300 Mbps, which is impressive for that distance.

These are strong results, not just acceptable ones. NordVPN did not fall apart when the test route left the home region.

Baseline line speed:536.70 Mbps download
Best VPN result:517.17 Mbps in Manchester
Best long-distance result:458.28 Mbps in New York
Overall takeaway:Fast enough for almost anyone
Test Location Average Download Retention Average Upload Average Ping
No VPN Baseline 536.70 Mbps 100% 50.93 Mbps 11.67 ms
UK Manchester 517.17 Mbps 96.36% 43.76 Mbps 25.00 ms
USA New York 458.28 Mbps 85.39% 48.01 Mbps 90.67 ms
Australia Melbourne 311.75 Mbps 58.09% 35.79 Mbps 305.33 ms

What the routing checks told us

We also ran wrong-side tests to look for obvious fake-location behaviour. The New York route came back with an average round-trip ping of 164.33 ms when forced against a UK server. Melbourne hit 578.00 ms. Those numbers are consistent with traffic travelling that distance.

That does not prove every NordVPN endpoint behaves the same way, but it makes the New York and Melbourne test routes look credible. If you want the plain-English version of this problem, read our guide to where a VPN server is really located. For the full breakdown, read the full NordVPN speed test article.

Feature Comparison

If you are cross-shopping, our full NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison is worth a read. At a high level, this is where NordVPN stands out right now.

Feature NordVPN Typical Competitor Verdict
Security Extras Scam/phishing protection, Dark Web Monitor, Android Call Protection where available Basic blocker or lighter extras Stronger bundle
Connection Logic Preferred location plus smarter fastest-server choice Standard quick connect only Better tuned
Trust Signals Repeated assurance engagements, RAM-only servers, strong trust story Usually fewer public checks Above average
Restricted Network Tools NordWhisper plus mature standard options Often a simpler protocol set Useful edge
Verified Speed Story Very strong UK, US and AU test results Often less transparent or less consistent Strong evidence

The Trade-Offs

NordVPN is easy to recommend, but it is not perfect. The main compromise is that the full package now depends more on device, plan and region than it used to.

Platform variation: Some of the best features are limited by operating system, supported browser, subscription tier or country. Always check what your device and plan actually get.

Pricing: NordVPN can be great value, but you should still compare the current NordVPN deals & offers and the latest NordVPN trial options before you buy.

Feature creep: Some people want a VPN and nothing else. NordVPN is clearly building a broader security product now, and not everyone will prefer that direction.

Trust History

The old incident still matters, but so does the response

NordVPN had an older third-party datacentre incident, and it is worth knowing about before you trust it with everyday traffic.

What matters now is the response. NordVPN has added repeated assurance engagements, moved further toward RAM-only infrastructure, and built a stronger trust case than it had at the time. For the full background, read our NordVPN history guide and our plain-English answer to is NordVPN safe.

Ownership & Jurisdiction

Why this still matters

Jurisdiction isn't everything, but it still shapes the privacy conversation. NordVPN says the VPN service is based in Panama, while Nord Security, its parent company, is based in the Netherlands. That distinction is worth making clearly because ownership structure and service jurisdiction are not the same thing.

Jurisdiction only carries weight when it is backed by solid engineering. In NordVPN's case, the audits, RAM-only servers, strong protocol design and recent testing make the privacy story more convincing.

Hands-On Test Results

The practical test results below come from the January 2026 speed and routing session on a wired 500Mbps fibre line. They show where NordVPN performed well, where it has limits, and what to check before you buy.

Pass Speed and stability

NordVPN stayed fast across local and long-distance routes, with 517.17 Mbps in Manchester, 458.28 Mbps in New York and 311.75 Mbps in Melbourne.

Pass Routing credibility

The New York and Melbourne checks produced latency that matched the distance. Those two routes did not show obvious fake-location behaviour.

Partially pass Feature consistency

The security bundle is stronger than before, but availability still depends on your device, app version, plan and region.

Fail Simple VPN-only experience

NordVPN now feels more like a wider security suite than a basic VPN switch. That helps most people, but it may feel too much if you only want a plain, lightweight VPN. If that sounds like you, compare NordVPN basic first.

Caveat Latest speed test date

The speed figures are from January 2026, not a live speed test from 1st July 2026. Treat them as measured lab data, not a guarantee for every server or connection.

Caveat Network claims need context

The 79-location figure refers to the January 2026 virtual-location count, not NordVPN's full server network. Physical, virtual and total server coverage are different things.

FAQs

Is NordVPN still worth paying for in 2026?

Yes. NordVPN is one of the strongest all-round VPNs for speed, streaming support, travel use and everyday privacy. It is especially good if you want a fast VPN with extra security tools built in.

What should I check before buying NordVPN?

Check the renewal price, the features included in your chosen plan, and whether tools such as Threat Protection, Dark Web Monitor and Call Protection work on your main device and country.

How fast was NordVPN in our January 2026 test?

On our wired 500Mbps fibre line it averaged 517.17 Mbps in the UK, 458.28 Mbps in New York and 311.75 Mbps in Melbourne. Those are very strong numbers, especially for the US and Australia routes.

Does NordVPN use real or virtual locations?

It uses both. Virtual locations help NordVPN cover more countries, while physical locations matter more if you care about exactly where the server hardware sits.

Is NordVPN safer now than it was in 2025?

Yes. The service now has a wider protection stack, stronger mobile tools on supported plans and regions, and better day-to-day threat handling than it had when it scored 9.2/10.

Does NordVPN have a free trial or live deals?

Yes. Check our current NordVPN free trial guide and our live NordVPN deals page because trial routes and offers can change.
