ExpressVPN vs NordVPN
Comparison Analysis
Quick Comparison (At a Glance)
ExpressVPN
- Protocol: Lightway (Custom built).
- Countries: 105 (Excellent global reach).
- Connections: 8 simultaneous devices.
- Standout: Best router app (Aircove).
NordVPN
- Protocol: NordLynx (WireGuard based).
- Countries: 111+ (Slightly larger network).
- Connections: 10 simultaneous devices.
- Standout: Threat Protection Pro.
1) Speed: NordLynx vs Lightway
Both providers have moved away from standard OpenVPN to proprietary protocols. ExpressVPN uses Lightway. This is built for stability and battery efficiency. It connects almost instantly and is very lightweight on code which makes it ideal for mobile devices where battery life is a priority.
NordVPN uses NordLynx which is built on WireGuard. In our raw throughput tests NordLynx consistently pushes higher peak speeds particularly on gigabit fibre connections. While both are fast enough for 4K streaming NordVPN currently holds the title for raw speed potential.
2) Servers: Global Reach
For years ExpressVPN was the king of country coverage. They currently offer servers in 105 countries which ensures you can almost always find a local server nearby. Their virtual server locations are transparently listed for areas where physical hardware is difficult to maintain.
NordVPN has massively expanded their network. They now cover 111+ countries with over 6,000 individual servers. This puts them slightly ahead in terms of sheer hardware volume and country options. Both networks are capable of bypassing heavy geographic restrictions but NordVPN's server count helps reduce load during peak times.
3) Features & Privacy Suites
This is where the difference becomes clear. ExpressVPN focuses on doing one thing perfectly. Their app is simple and clutter-free. Their main extra feature is Threat Manager which blocks trackers at the DNS level.
NordVPN aims to be a full cybersecurity suite. Their subscription includes:
- Threat Protection Pro: Active malware scanning for downloads and web protection.
- Meshnet: A unique tool that lets you link devices directly for secure file sharing or gaming.
- Dark Web Monitor: Alerts you if your credentials are leaked.
If you want a "set and forget" button choose ExpressVPN. If you want a swiss-army knife of tools choose NordVPN.
4) Jurisdiction & Trust
Both companies understand that trust is their primary product and both have taken significant steps to prove their reliability to the user.
ExpressVPN operates from the British Virgin Islands. This is an offshore jurisdiction with no mandatory data retention laws. They have undergone multiple independent audits by firms such as KPMG and Cure53 to verify their no-logs claims and the security of their Lightway protocol.
NordVPN operates from Panama. Similar to the BVI this location has no data retention laws. NordVPN has commissioned extensive audits from PwC and Deloitte. Their no-logs policy has been verified multiple times. Both providers use RAM-only servers which means data is wiped every time the server is rebooted.
5) Streaming & Reliability
Both VPNs are top tier for unlocking content. You will rarely face issues with either for major platforms like Netflix or BBC iPlayer.
ExpressVPN works seamlessly across a wide variety of regional libraries including the US, UK, Japan, and Canada. Their MediaStreamer feature is particularly useful for smart TVs and game consoles that cannot run VPN apps natively. It changes your DNS location without encryption to maximise streaming speeds.
NordVPN matches this performance and often loads 4K content slightly faster due to the NordLynx protocol. Their SmartPlay technology is built into the app so there is no extra configuration needed to bypass blocks. If you encounter a stubbornly blocked site NordVPN's obfuscated servers are excellent at hiding the fact you are using a VPN at all.
6) Customer Support & Usability
The user experience is distinct between the two. ExpressVPN uses a "one-click" design philosophy. The app is a small mobile-style window on desktops with a large connect button. It is incredibly easy to use but offers less visual feedback. Their customer support chat is often cited as the friendliest in the industry with knowledgeable agents available 24/7.
NordVPN uses a visual map interface. You can drag and drop around the globe to select servers. This looks modern and tech-forward but can feel cluttered on smaller screens. Like ExpressVPN they offer 24/7 live chat support. While their agents are helpful the initial interaction is often with a chatbot before you reach a human.
7) Price and Value
ExpressVPN has traditionally positioned itself as a premium service. While they have introduced longer plans to lower the cost they are generally more expensive than the competition. They rarely run deep discounts which keeps their pricing structure simple but high.
NordVPN is aggressive with pricing. Their 2-year deals are often significantly cheaper per month than ExpressVPN's best offer. When you factor in the extra tools included in the bundle like antivirus and cloud storage options NordVPN generally offers better raw value for money.
