Proton VPN: open-source apps and Swiss privacy positioning

Proton VPN is operated from Switzerland and makes its main VPN applications open source. It has also published recurring independent no-logs audits. The result is a service whose privacy story is unusually visible: the code can be inspected, the no-logs claim is externally tested, and advanced features are clearly separated from ordinary connections.

Server infrastructure and multi-hop protection

The published network figures are large in both cases. NordVPN currently lists more than 8,400 servers across more than 167 countries. Proton VPN Plus lists more than 20,000 servers in more than 144 countries. Server totals alone do not determine quality, but both networks provide enough geographic choice for most travellers and remote workers.

RAM-only servers and hardened entry points

Proton VPN takes a different approach with Secure Core. When enabled, traffic enters Proton’s network through a hardened server in a privacy-friendly location before leaving through the selected exit country. This is intended to reduce the risk posed by a compromised exit server or hostile data centre.

NordVPN’s Double VPN also sends traffic through two VPN servers, but the emphasis is slightly different. Neither mode is necessary for ordinary shopping, streaming or casual browsing, and both add latency. Apps, protocols and device support

Both paid services allow 10 simultaneous connections and provide apps for the major desktop, mobile and TV platforms. They also support routers through manual configuration, which can protect devices that do not have a native VPN app.

Streaming, torrenting and gaming

NordVPN is our first choice for streaming because it combines strong connection speeds with a simple server-selection process and broad app support. Proton VPN Plus is also a capable streaming service, but streaming access is a paid feature and availability can change as platforms update their VPN detection.

Whichever provider you choose, use your own legitimate subscriptions and remember that a VPN cannot guarantee permanent access to every regional library.

Torrenting and port forwarding

Both paid products permit P2P traffic. NordVPN provides P2P-optimised servers and makes them easy to find. Proton VPN marks dedicated P2P servers and supports port forwarding on compatible paid setups, which can improve incoming peer connectivity for some torrent clients.

Proton VPN Free does not support P2P traffic. For legal downloads, the paid Proton plan has the more flexible specialist feature set, while NordVPN is simpler to configure and fast enough for large transfers.

Gaming and latency

For gaming, use the nearest normal server and avoid multi-hop modes unless privacy matters more than ping. NordVPN’s speed advantage makes it our preferred option for competitive or cloud gaming, although neither VPN can fix poor routing beyond the VPN network or reduce latency in every situation.

Proton VPN Free vs NordVPN

This is the clearest difference in the entire NordVPN vs Proton VPN comparison. NordVPN does not offer a permanent free service. Proton VPN Free has no data cap, supports one active connection and automatically connects users through free infrastructure covering 10 countries.

The free plan is designed for private browsing rather than as a complete replacement for Proton VPN Plus. It does not include the full paid server network, Secure Core, streaming support, P2P servers or NetShield’s complete feature set. Proton VPN is the better specialist choice. Choose it when open-source apps, Swiss jurisdiction, Secure Core, port forwarding or a high-quality free plan outweigh NordVPN’s performance and convenience advantages.

The practical decision is simple: pick NordVPN when you want the best all-round paid experience; pick Proton VPN when transparency and privacy architecture are the main reasons you are buying a VPN.
